Overview
Embark on an enriching tour that takes you through the rich history and culture of Dhofar.
Begin by visiting the fishing village of Taqa, a charming old town renowned for its Taqa Castle and the unique Taqa stone houses surrounded by watchtowers.
Capture memorable photos at Taqa Castle and explore the historic Bait Koofan Mansion.
Continue your journey to the ancient site of Khor Rori Creek, home to the ruins of the ancient city of Samhuram, once the capital of Arabia’s thriving frankincense trade.
The archaeological excavations here reveal the city’s ancient trade connections with the Far East and Greece.
Next, visit Mirbat, the ancient capital of Dhofar, which played a significant role in the 9th century for its trade in frankincense, horses, and slaves.
Stroll through the town to witness the intricate woodcarvings that adorn the old houses, and if lucky, catch a glimpse of boatloads of fish arriving at the harbor.
Visit one of Dhofar’s most famous historic sites, Bin Ali’s Tomb, a twin-domed structure built in memory of Mohamed bin Ali, who passed away in 1135 AD.
This architectural gem stands as a fine example of medieval craftsmanship.
End your tour with a visit to Mirbat Castle, perched majestically on the beach, where displays of the life and customs of the Jebali people of Dhofar offer an immersive cultural experience.
